What It’s Like To Be a Type A Teacher

Being a type A teacher can be equally invigorating and maddening. These teachers are like the Energizer Bunny, always ready to change lives while standing with a mile long to-do list clutched in one of their eager hands. Here are some ways to tell if you are a type A teacher…

  1. Your classroom is laid out for success as soon as students enter at 8 a.m.

Supplies ready to go? Check. Papers arranged neatly on desks? Check. Standing outside the door of your room, prepared to greet each and every one of your munchkins? Check, check and check! You have everything laid out in perfect, assembly-line order so you don’t have to scramble to find where you put that one assignment that you may or may not have time for. You are an education warrior and you are ready to seize the day!

  1. Procrastination is a term that never applies to you.

Your colleagues give you crap for always being the first person who turns in paperwork and who knows the date of that one random assembly two months from now. Your grades are always turned in on time and your lesson plans are done before anyone else’s. You are well aware of how annoying you are to those who can’t keep up with your pace, but you truly can’t help it!

  1. You have a hard time understanding the inner workings of a type B colleague.

What do you mean you’ll email a parent later? Why are you so relaxed about things? How do I get this laidback attitude that you so effortlessly possess?

  1. You have an unparalleled level of focus.

Those teacher work days where no one accomplishes anything? That ain’t you. While everyone is chatting about who knows what, you are happily crossing things off your list. Six hours of uninterrupted work time? This is what dreams are made of.

  1. You get stressed out very easily.

Why are we adding things to the calendar in December? Why put a fire drill, a field trip, an informal observation, a Christmas Concert, and a major test all in one week? Do I look like Harry Houdini? How am I supposed to make this stuff magically happen without heavily drinking on a Monday?

  1. You have an extremely hard time relaxing.

You have your arsenal of products: essential oils, meditation apps, bath bombs, soothing candles, etc.. However, you still have a hard time falling asleep because your mind just won’t turn off. What can you do to better reach little Johnny in class? Where can I move Angela so she stops talking to everyone around her? How do I gently tell parents that Ethan most definitely has problems with emotional regulation? And more importantly…will my brain ever turn off so I can sleep?!

  1. You are incredibly passionate about the work you do, and you give 110% to teaching each and every day.

You can’t imagine doing anything carelessly. You need to nail every lesson plan and activity so your students are constantly learning and growing. You may get frustrated and upset, but you are NOT a quitter. Your passion for teaching is palpable in everything you do and your students WILL change the world while you fervently cheer them on from the sidelines.
